Emily Deschanel promises ‘heartfelt’ series finale for Bones

Bones star Emily Deschanel knows how difficult it is to nail a series finale.
“It’s hard to be completely satisfied when you like a show and it ends,” Deschanel tells EW. “I know from being a viewer of other shows. You’re just like, ‘Well, yeah, I guess they did everything I wanted, but it’s still over!’”

But Bones, which wraps up Tuesday after 246 episodes, seems poised to stick the landing: Deschanel believes the final hour has a bit of everything fans love about the long-running series. “It’s dramatic, it’s exciting, it’s heartfelt,” she says. “It goes to the core of the characters and who they are, and I think it wraps up a lot of different story lines. I think it did a great job, and I was satisfied with it.”

Aside from series creator Hart Hanson, who Deschanel says was unable to return, the finale was a collaborative effort from most of the core minds behind the show: The story outline came from former showrunner Stephen Nathan, while current showrunners Michael Peterson and Jonathan Collier wrote the hour alongside Executive Producer Karine Rosenthal. Even Deschanel and costar David Boreanaz had a hand; after crafting the initial story, the writers went to the leads to get their input.

Given that Bones has skirted death almost as many times as its characters, the ending fans will experience isn’t the first conclusion envisioned for the show. “We talked about how we were going to end it — I mean, we hypothetically talked about it for years, little bits and pieces,” Deschanel says, noting it’s “very surreal” that the time has finally come. And when Bones signs off, the final product will be as much a surprise to its star as it is to the fans.

“I have not seen it yet,” says Deschanel. “I just lived it.”

Bones’ series finale airs Tuesday, March 28 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
